Lemon Tree Care

Commercial lemon tree growing takes place in warm parts of the world, such as Spain, Portugal, Brazil and southern United States. Even if you live in somewhat colder regions, you can however succeed in growing lemon trees in your garden if you select a lemon variety suitable for your location and provide it with suitable lemon tree care. It might not yield the huger harvest required from commercially grown lemon trees, but it will still produce a fair amount of fruits and also develop beautiful shiny leaves and fragrant white flowers.

If you live in really cold parts of the world, your best choice is however to grow an indoor lemon tree since lemon trees are sensitive to frost. Not even the best lemon tree care in the world can make a lemon tree thrive in areas where it is frequently exposed to freezing temperatures. Unlike many other citrus species, such as the sweet orange, lemon trees are renowned for producing useable fruit even when kept indoors. Pruning can be necessary to keep the lemon tree at a manageable height, unless you obtain one of the dwarf varieties. You will find more information about indoor lemon tree growing and indoor lemon tree care at the “Lemon Tree Growing” section of this site.

Lemon tree care tip # 1

As mentioned above, it is strongly recommended to pick a lemon variety suitable for your particular area. This will save you a lot of problems in the long run and make proper lemon tree care less tasking. Try to find out as much as possible about the lemon variety that you choose. Which day and night temperature does it prefer? Is it prone to any particular diseases or pest infections? How much water does it require? Should it be pruned in any particular fashion?

Lemon tree care tip # 2

Choosing a suitable spot for your lemon tree is an essential part of proper lemon tree care. The perfect spot is warm and sunny and have well-drained soil that will not retain a lot of water. If you live in an area prone to occasional frosts, you can plant the lemon tree next to a building, under an eave or in a similarly sheltered spot to provide the lemon tree with some frost protections.

Lemon tree care tip # 3

Watering is naturally an important part of routine lemon tree care , especially if you live in a dry climate where natural downpour is scarce. It is recommended to place 2-3 inches of organic matter under the canopy as a part of the lemon tree care to prevent moist from evaporating. How much water your lemon tree will need will naturally depend on which lemon tree variant you selected and how the current weather conditions are in you area. Warm and dry weather will require more watering than cool and rainy conditions. A very general rule of thumb states that a lemon tree should be watered once a week, or once every 10th day, during the midsummer season. A newly planted lemon tree will need much more frequent watering until it has become properly established.

Lemon tree care tip # 4

The recommended lemon tree care regarding fertilization is to regularly add a fertilizer between February and August and refraining from adding any fertilizer during the winter season. Fertilizing every 4-6 weeks is usually enough, but will of course depend on how much nutrients that are transported away by water.

Lemon tree care tip # 5

Prune your lemon tree annually or every second year. This is not an obligatory part of proper lemon tree care, but it will make it easier to reach the lemon fruits. New growth should be cut back by 25-35 percent.
